In a yearly tradition, WCRB In Concert with the Boston Children’s Chorus honors Dr. King’s legacy with a program of works by African-American composers, traditional spirituals, and much more, now available on demand.

We’ll listen to the 2018 tribute concert, entitled “Take My Hand”, which marked 50 years since the civil rights leader was brought down by an assassin’s bullet.  Highlights include:

  • A moving performance of “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”, Dr. King’s favorite hymn, which Mahalia Jackson sang at his funeral.
  • BCC’s Advanced choirs, pouring their hearts into songs recalling the pain of the Jim Crow era (“Strange Fruit” and “The Death of Emmett Till”);
  • The youngest singers, in the training and intermediate choirs singing a piece that captures the irony of racial divisions (“You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught”);
  • A massed choir, including the 60-member BCC Alumni Chorus, performing an uplifting spiritual (“My God is a Rock”)

BCC’s President and Artistic Director, Dr. Anthony Trecek-King, will be on hand, to help WCRB host Brian McCreath give context to this very special broadcast.
